Memory of Diana dominates royal wedding

By Alice Ritchie

LONDON, April 28, 2011 (AFP) - From the engagement ring to the wedding venue, Princess Diana will be present in every aspect of Prince William's marriage to Kate Middleton on Friday, just as her son wanted her to be.

But although Diana's failed marriage to Prince Charles and her tragic death provide a haunting precedent for Kate, commentators say the 29-year-old has far more chance of happiness than Diana ever did.

Amid the inevitable comparisons between the two women, William has insisted that "no one is trying to fill my mother's shoes".

Yet his actions have ensured Diana is remembered everywhere Kate turns.

He proposed with his mother's diamond and sapphire ring, explaining afterwards that "this was my way of keeping her close to it all". Kate said it was "very, very special" and promised to treasure it.

Although the couple decided not to follow his parents and marry in St Paul's Cathedral, their choice of Westminster Abbey is heavy with symbolism.

The future Queen Elizabeth II of England received a square-cut diamond engagement ring with diamond side stones set in platinum from Lt. Philip Mountbatten, the future Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh. The diamonds for Queen Elizabeth's engagement ring have a special history: they came from a tiara belonging to Philip's mother, Princess Andrew of Greece. Lucky Princess Diana, she got to choose her own ring from a selection presented by Garrard Jewelers when Prince Charles proposed. There are a few different theories on why Diana selected the 18-carat oval sapphire surrounded by 14 diamonds: the color matched her eyes, the Queen may have actually selected it, or as Diana was later quoted as saying, "It was the biggest." When Crown Prince Pavlos of Greece proposed to Marie-Chantal Miller, reportedly on a ski lift in Switzerland, it was with this ring...

Royal Wedding Mania

As many of you know, Prince William is due to marry his fiancé, Kate Middleton, at the West Minster Abbey this Friday– April 29, 2011. After dating for allegedly 8 years, Prince William popped the question to Kate while vacationing in Kenya in October of 2010. Prince William proposed to Kate with his mother’s famous blue sapphire and diamond engagement ring. The ring was originally passed down to his brother Harry, following Princess Diana’s death. Harry then decided to hand the ring over to William so that he could he use it for his proposal to Kate. Sources say William, however, will not wear a wedding band once he ties the knot (He apparently doesn’t want to…). Although the couple had been engaged for 7 months, the engagement did not seek formal approval from the Queen until April 21st, 2011. It’s hard enough to muster up the courage to ask your girlfriend’s parents permission for her hand in marriage, but can you imagine asking the Queen of England?! The last memorable royal wedding for the family was on July 29, 1981, when Prince Charles married the country’s beloved Princess Diana. Although she passed away several years ago, her memory still lives on and she is referred to by many as “The Queen of Hearts”. It is almost twenty years later now, and their very own son, Prince William, will take Kate Middleton, of Berkshire, England, to be his wife. People all over the world admire the Royal Family, and will be tuning in to watch the wedding, which will air live on television. Weeks leading up to the wedding, there have been specials about the Royal Family on various TV stations.
