Basketball: GC women share conference title, take top seed

MARIANNA — The historical record will indicate Gulf Coast and Pensacola shared a Panhandle Conference title this year.
Only one of those teams secured the conference’s No. 1 seed at the FCSAA state tournament, however.
Gulf Coast clinched at least a share of its 14th Panhandle championship in 15 seasons Saturday night with a runaway 75-51 victory over Chipola at the Milton H. Johnson Health Center. The Lady Commodores will represent the Panhandle as the conference’s top seed at the state tournament set to begin March 8 in Marianna.
The Lady Commodores improved to 22-4 overall and 9-3 in the conference. Pensacola also finished 9-3 in the Panhandle — and 23-4 overall — after collecting a 71-57 win at Tallahassee earlier Saturday. Because GC defeated Pensacola two out of three times during the regular season, the Lady Commodores reeled in the No. 1 seed out of the Panhandle. GC also finished the regular season strong, sweeping all four conference opponents over the final two weeks.
