November’s birthstone is topaz, it’s name comes via the old French and Latin from the Greek word meaning Τοpáziοs, the ancient name for St John’s Island in the Red sea where this mystical stone was rumoured to have been mined.
Many different empires used topaz for certain qualities, the Greeks believed it had the power to increase strength and to make its wearer invisible in times of emergency. The Egyptians wore it as an amulet to protect them from injury whilst the Romans believed it had the power to improve eyesight.
In more modern times we look upon topaz more so as just a beautiful jewell. Alongside the traditional orange topaz we use blue topaz and pink topaz in our jewellery.
Probably the most famous topaz is called the Braganza Diamond, this is actually a colourless topaz originally thought to be a diamond, the 1680ct stone is set into the Portugese crown jewels!
The natural gemstones are set in either 9ct yellow or white gold. The rings come in full set bands where the stones go all the way around, akin to a full diamond eternity ring. Matching 'disco ball' stud earrings and pendants are available.
