Bridal jewelry is a generic term that describes the ring worn by groom and the two main rings worn by the bride, the engagement ring and the wedding ring. Today there is a lot more flexibility and individuality in what constitutes an engagement ring and a wedding ring, but there are still some general rules that separate the two.

An engagement ring features a prominent center stone. Traditionally that stone is a diamond, although colored precious stones like rubies, emeralds, sapphires and tanzanite have gained in popularity as center stones for engagement rings. Colored center stones are not new to engagement rings- garnet and ruby rings were widely used to mark engagements in Victorian times.

The center stone of engagement rings are either larger or set more prominently than any other stones in the ring. Solitaire rings, where the center diamond is the only stone in the ring and is set high above a solid platinum or gold band, are what most people think of when they envision an engagement ring. However, low set diamonds or three-stone rings are not uncommon choices. Some very contemporary engagement rings even feature diamonds or colored stones set flush into a thicker band. Claddagh rings, a traditional Irish design, are also sometimes used as engagement rings.

Bespoke 18ct white gold engagement ring - The Harriet Kelsall ...

Working in the Halls Green studio, it is always very exciting to hear from the designers firsthand about individual commissions they have been working on, seeing the design come to life from the initial design consultation through the making stages and then arriving at the final bespoke piece.

After speaking with the very talented Antoinette about a design she had recently been working on for some lovely customers of hers, I thought it would be nice to share with you and to give you an insight into how a bespoke piece can come about.

The lovely couple had seen some designs on our website which caught there eye, in particular this beautiful white gold, diamond, sapphire and tourmaline sea-foam inspired engagement ring designed by Harriet.

What initially attracted them to the sea-foam inspired ring were the different shades of green and blue. They were looking to find a way to combine these colours to form the basis of their own unique ring, whilst creating something that was slightly different from the traditional style.

Platinum and diamond Art Deco inspired engagement ring - The ...

April is upon us and so I think it only fair to look even closer at this month's birthstone and really appreciate diamonds. Diamonds are a fabulous gemstone and it is said that they not only help to increase the strength and love between people but, legend has it they are great healers for illnesses as they create balance and clarity within the body. We here at Harriet Kelsall have some gorgeous ring designs which involve this delicious stone and here is one of my favorite designs of late and it is in our ready to wear collection in Halls Green at the moment.

This engagement ring has been designed by Alice Rochester and she has created a stunning ring inspired by art deco designs. Art deco was an era of exciting innovation and was considered to be glamorous and very stylish, whilst at the same time being functional and contemporary. So, Alice has brought this theme into her work today and has created a beautiful piece of work to reflect this classic style.
